1. & 2.Depends on your discipline. Field agents tend to be recruited, while Scitech operatives apply after pursuing higher education.
3. SHIELD Academy, though it's currently being overhauled, given that half the staff were HYDRA.

4. You get a generic acceptance letter with the logo on it, as with any other school.
No magical familiars involved.
